Udzungwa Mountain National Park Overview

The Udzungwa Mountain National Park is a park dedicated for anyone who is botanically inclined or interested in hiking away the crowds. It has the abundance of unique plants and it is home for important population of primates and grey-faced sengi. There are also elephants, buffaloes, leopards, hippos, crocodiles and many more.

Birding is excellent, especially on the surrounding Kilembero floodplains. A good place to start is in the wetlands bordering the main road. Behind the forest’s edge, Colobus and other primates are frequently spotted.

The udzungwa’s high degree of endemism and biodiversity is due in large part, to the areas constant climate over million years, which has given species a chance to evolve. Another factor is Udzungwas altitudinal range.

It has Sanje falls where swimming and camping is possible.

It has a tiny market in Mang’ula near the train station, for long hikes you will need to carry supply of dry fruits and nuts to supplement the bland locally available offerings. You can find water bottle near the market. However, it’s better to carry water filter for longer treks.

Why go: Rugged hiking; 10 species of primates, waterfalls, birding.

When to go: Late June through January; avoid March through May rainy seasons as many trails are not cleared.
