Mount Ol Doinyo Lengai is generally called as ‘Mountain of God’ in Maasai language. This is one of the most beautiful mountains in Africa. This one has the perfect volcanic cone with steep sides rising to small flat-topped peak.
This mountain is in the crater Highlands and it is the youngest volcano in the crater, and is still active with the volcanic eruption in 2008.
You can still see the steam vents and growing ash cones. The summit will be possible in one long day. With all the ash cones, lot of the routes make it very difficult.
As it is an active volcano, views down into the crater is limited than in past years. There are 2 special campsites around the Empakai crater sites and further 15 on the western plains.
The maasai believes that white rock symbolizes the white beard of Enkai. This mountain is steep and you will need determination to climb it. However, you will not require any technical skills to reach the peak.
The lava here is not as hot as other volcanoes lava recorded in the world. It almost takes 3 days to summit the Mount Ol’doyino Lenkai. Once you climb you can take a small tour of Lake natron, where you can find numerous flamingos and other birds.
Mount Ol Doinyo Lengai also has phases of explosive activity during which the composition of the lava may contain much more silicate material.
Views in the north from its summit crater lies the hot barren salt flats of Lake Natron stretch into the distance, beyond lies the Kenyan border.
To the south stretches the Crater Highlands, Ngorongoro being one of the prime wildlife conservation areas in Africa.
The ascent of OldoinyoLengai is demanding on account of the day time heat, lack of water, steep and unstable slopes of ash and crumbly rocks.
